Stendhal said of the city: "there is a mountain at the end of every street."

Grenoble is at the leading edge of technology and has a renowned university, as well as being a city of art with a fascinating history.

Historical centre

Grenoble has a number of architectural and cultural treasures. Places St-André, Notre-Dame and Grenette, the old law courts and the Jardin de Ville should figure on every tourist's list of places to visit.

The fortifications

Grenoble used to be a walled town and a few remains of the ramparts can still be seen today, including the Bastille fort. It can be reached by cable-car or, for the intrepid, via a path including nearly 400 steps.

From the top, the views of Grenoble and the surrounding area are incomparable.

Musée de Grenoble

One of France's most prestigious art galleries, with major collections of ancient, modern and contemporary works.

Musée Dauphinois

From its hillside position overlooking Grenoble, this folk museum preserves, promotes and passes on the memories of those who lived in the province of Dauphiné.
